Math & Statistics
For discussing mathematics and statistics.
Sports Analytics?
Is anyone into sports viewership? And is sports just bread and circuses that keeps the masses satiated or is there potential to do some serious statistics in it? Does anyone know about SABRmetrics? Is it serious research or just basic stuff that no one looked into, but then a bunch of smart guys applied standard statistical techniques to baseball, something no one had done before and revolutioniz…
You Could Have Come Up With Kimi Delta Attention
From [here](https://blog.doubleword.ai/you-could-have-come-up-with-kimi-delta-attention). The Chinese were able to kick softmax out of the training process for LLM creation and make a linear attention equation that outperforms it. I wonder if this is closer to what happens in animal and human brains.
Thoughts On Math Olympiads?
Post soviet countries, Israel, and Asian countries excel at it, but are they testing real mathematical ability or are they just glorified spelling bee contests? This does not translate to field medal wins although a Romanian dude told me it correlates very strongly with it.
Future Of Statistics
It seems like since the AI boom everyone wants to get into data science and machine learning. But the actual jobs are coding heavy, and are less about modelling data and testing hypothesis. Even the entry level data analyst jobs are mostly about writing SQL queries. Given that more and more people would join data science or some data related field, what do you think is the future of statistics, e…
What are you reading?
Thread for what math you are currently reading. I am reading Shreve's [Stochastic Calculus for Finance II](https://github.com/changshun/wisecourse1415/blob/master/Advanced%20Financial%20Economics/Required%20textbook/Stochastic%20Calculus%20for%20Finance%20I&II/Steven%20E.%20Shreve-Stochastic%20Calculus%20for%20Finance%20II_20150303200346.pdf). It's actually really good. It's highly regarded in qu…
Is He Genuine. Genes Affecting Thinking
This guy here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g8CQfxwrnzs He is Simplistics(Quant Psych) and he makes the claim in this video that the foundation of statistics is fragile, I don't want to critique this particular video, but I see a trend in his videos where he is bashing and criticizing statistical methods. In one video he talked about how slapping a regression onto everything is wrong. He seems …
Hidden variables behind GDP per capita and economic freedom correlation
IQ has been known to predict GDP per capita for a while, same is true for economic freedom. However, economic freedom does not seem like a tangible biological variable like IQ, personality or leftism. I ran a regression with the two in R, including FDI. Now my stats skills are not as good as the other HBDers, but I would like to know what you guys think is the biological variable underneath econo…
Measure Theory and HBD
I've recently learned measure theory from [Tao's book](https://terrytao.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/gsm-126-tao5-measure-book.pdf) and [these really good course notes](https://e.math.cornell.edu/people/belk/measuretheory/). Here is an example of the content: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------…
