I think a gendered evo-psych just-so story for this is post-hoc and adds nothing of value. We should be looking to more proximal causes. Plenty of women have more men willing to give them attention and resources than they’re willing to get intimate with, and some don’t see the issue with having it both ways, especially if they’re Machiavellian enough to knowingly string them along. Men like interacting with attractive women who are nice to them and like pleasing them and don’t want to cut them off. It’s as simple as that.
