I think IQ needs more qualitative interpretations – one of the original and most effective of these is the mental age interpretation. It’s quite easy to do by just giving children of different ages adult IQ tests.

A 9-year-old child with an IQ of 130 has about the same intellectual ability as a 100-IQ adult. That is, they answer questions of the same difficulty with the same probability of success.

IQ scores are relative and usually age-normed. But because Rasch scores put a person’s ability and an item’s difficulty on the same absolute scale, you can compare a child and an adult by the same underlying level of performance rather than just their age-normed IQ.

This shows many interesting facts. For instance:

  • A 10-year-old at 145 IQ and a 13-year-old at 130 IQ are at the same level of intellectual ability.
  • The difference between the smartest and least intelligent adults in a representative group of 40 people is roughly as large as the difference between an average adult and an 8-year-old child.

We know one’s final adult IQ is obtained around the age of 16. The suggestion is that one standard deviation is worth about 3 years of child development. By this rule of thumb, in a group of 40 people you’ll probably have someone at -2 SDs, which makes them like an average 10 year old.

My IQ is in between 135 and 145, so when I was 13 I was likely smarter than all of my teachers, since my adjusted total IQ would have been 120 to…

Good post, but respectfully, I don’t think IQ, the measure of capacity for cognitive complexity, is the measure of “adulthood.” The g factor is a real and important dimension, but it is a dimension, not the whole space. As Cremieux has pointed out, a person with an IQ of 70 who just lies on the left of a low-mean population distribution is quite obviously different from an “intellectually disabled” person with the same IQ score. One is visibly capable of much more even if they’d both fill out the Woodcock-Johnson the same way. I think it’s just as obvious that a child is not mentally equivalent to an adult who’d get as many questions on the Woodcock-Johnson right.

The child’s g is operating on a brain that is still under construction in dimensions g doesn’t measure. A bright 12-year-old can genuinely out-reason the adults around him on a nonfiction book and still have the limited perspective and impulse-regulation architecture of a 12-year-old, because those are different systems maturing on different timelines. I recall even you admitted on an X account that you would’ve fallen for foolish ideologies at 15, and that doesn’t mean you’re not bright; it’s normal for bright adolescents to hold overconfident limited-perspective beliefs that they cringe at in hindsight. People involved in gifted special education speak of “asynchronous development” - some children who score gifted on cognitive measures are not developmentally more “mature” than their peers but in fact unusually childish in some areas and need extra support to reach age-appropriate levels to avoid underachieving. Of course, the majority of gifted people do well in life and they have mental health issues at a lower rate than the general population, but the existence of the twice-exceptional population demonstrates that you can’t just use measures of g as all-purpose measures of “maturity.” A child can have genuinely exceptional g alongside a developmental disability that impairs exactly the executive, emotional, or social functions that adulthood asks for; if g were maturity, the twice-exceptional profile would be impossible.

It’s worth noting that even societies that recognized adulthood sooner recognized that chronological aging indicated “wisdom” that even the brightest young people lack. Although they didn’t put it in these terms, domain-specific crystallized knowledge (which is a huge component of “expert” cognition), the compiled social and practical knowledge that only experience builds, and “integration of affect with deliberation” are essential components of maturation, and these take time to grow no matter how bright one is. Ancient Rome recognized adulthood at 15, but it recognized a distinction between minores viginti quinque annis (“those lesser than 25 years”) and majores viginti quinque annis (“those greater than 25 years”), with lending heavily discouraged for the former. The American Founders set 35 as the minimum for a president not because they didn’t believe bright 17 year olds were really adults but because knowing a lot was essential for high-stakes multifactorial decision-making in proper perspective, and that grows with time.

The slide from “equal performance on the latent ability dimension” to “equal mental functioning” to “equal claim on adulthood” is a reconceptualization that nobody’s really thought of but you, not even the people who’ve developed IQ tests or done serious work in psychometrics longer than you’ve been alive, and while I agree with you that 18-as-adult is too high and many youth could be working toward their potential much sooner, I don’t agree with you there. Saying a child and an adult scoring the same have “the same mental age” is true only if you define mental age as exactly what the test measures, which isn’t any kind of qualitative insight, just circular reasoning.

If I had to guess, I’d say g explains at least half of the variance most people care about which distinguishes adult and child behavior. I think it’s on people who strongly claim it isn’t essentially all g to produce a measurement that captures the rest, because it’s obvious that it isn’t age, just something that somewhat weakly correlates with age when range is restricted to the teens. Also I think it probably depends on what you’re talking about. To be the president? g doesn’t change between 16 and 35 so it’s a bad indicator. To have basic civil rights? I think g is 80-90% of the variance at least. Generally retards are deprived of civil rights, and criminals. There’s no other group but minors. g captures why retards are deprived of rights. Are minors criminals? Not really. Teenagers tend to be moreso than 40 somethings but you can measure criminality and most teenagers are not antisocial enough to be deprived of rights. It’s easy to lock up the ones that are for actual bad behavior. So that leaves the question as to whether minors are retards. The answer is yes, they are retards, but not after an age which depends on the minor. But almost all of them are retards for at least a majority of the minorhood, ie until at least the age of 9. So it would seem minors are in fact deprived of their rights due to the assumption they are retarded, and that assumption actually works for a little more than 2/3 of randomly sampled minors (their age is random but under 18, their IQ genes are random. you probably pull a small child with a normie IQ, which would be retarded wrt adults). Now we have a test that scientifically identifies which ones are retarded and which ones are not. I think we should use it. Not really a huge leap, age lines are actually outdated as a concept, like crucifying criminals. You can just use tests now instead. Most civilizations of the future probably do it with tests.
